A glimpse into Passover past
Friday, April 7th, 2006Since Passover will be here soon, I thought I’d share a painting by my great-grandmother, Frances Handelman. It depicts the Pesachs of her childhood, led by her father, who was a rabbi. The photo of the painting (a quickie) is by my mother.
In the painting, you can see Elijah coming in for his visit. What you can’t tell from the photo is that this painting is somewhat 3D. Frances used numerous layers of paint to make certain objects, like the candles, stand out from the canvas.
Frances Handelman’s work was shown at the New York Museum of Modern Art, I believe in the late 1950s. One critic covering the exhibition called her the “Jewish Grandma Moses”. One of her daughters, Ruth Bingham, was also an artist. I hope to be able to display some of Ruth’s work here soon.
