Katrina and fact checking

Friday, September 23rd, 2005

Rita is on her way, and evacuees have filled up San Antonio. Meanwhile, urban legends about what happened in New Orleans after Katrina continue to fly. I’m sad to say that friends of mine believed the stories of rape and murder in the Convention Center, until I (hopefully) set them straight.

Ask yourself, “If these stories are true, where are the victims? Wouldn’t news shows be talking about them? Where are the bodies? The Convention Center is being cleaned out and no bodies were found. Where are the witnesses? Why didn’t any of the many reporters and their cameramen get footage of bodies, witnesses or victims?”

The Afro American Newspaper has an article that covers these and other stories that turned out to be untrue.

I recommend informing yourself before the next round of this garbage hits. After all, the east side of Houston (soon to be inundated by Rita) is primarily black, and hack journalists are likely to once again report on unverified racist rumors.

“Why is God mad at us?”

I’m not one to think of hurricanes as “God’s wrath”, but for those who are, it’s pretty clear what conclusion must be drawn: God’s pissed off at the US oil and natural gas industries.

If you don’t believe me, look at this oil refineries map and this natural gas facilities map.

If you want to make God happy, get serious about renewable energy!
