Email Interview With The SA Current
Wednesday, July 21st, 2004I did an email interview today with the San Antonio Current. I don’t know if I got back to the reporter in time to be included in the article, but here’s the Q&A:
Current: I know that you have supported Dennis Kucinich in the past and I was wondering:
1- If you’re still supporting Kucinich?
HA: Yes. I was a Kucinich delegate to the Texas Democratic Convention last month.
Current: 2- If you will switch your support to Kerry when he becomes the nominee?
HA: Yes. I’ve already ordered the bumpersticker! In fact, in the middle of writing this, I discovered that Dennis today announced that he’s dropping out of the race and endorsing the Kerry/Edwards ticket. I expected this to happen at the end of the coming weekend, but I guess I’m officially a Kerry supporter now!
Current: 3- If you do switch your support to Kerry, how will you reconcile the differences between the two candidates? (eg, their differences on Iraq, etc).
HA: I believe Kerry’s voting record a whole lot more than I believe the rhetoric that comes out of his campaign. Since 1988 (the furthest back I was able to track his votes), he has fought for progressive values and against government corruption. There have been lapses in judgment, of course. Like most of the Senate, he voted for the Patriot Act. And he voted to give Bush the power to invade Iraq.
Despite this, there’s absolutely no comparison between Bush and Kerry. Kerry is a man our voices can reach. He’s capable of re-evaluating his positions in the face of new evidence. George W. Bush has proven repeatedly that our pleas fall on deaf ears and an inflexible mindset. I fear for the future of our Democracy, should he be re-elected.
