Mac: Schedule Automated Uploads/Syncs To Mega’s Cloud

Schedule automated uploads!

The highest speeds and the lowest cost for uploading data usually happen in the middle of the night. If you’d like to schedule your Mega cloud syncs to happen automatically while you’re asleep or away from your computer, read on.

This was tested on a Macbook Pro running OS X 10.11 (El Capitan). The process to schedule automated uploads is simple, and anyone can do it, but be sure to follow these steps exactly. To make the magic happen, you’ll need:

  • The MEGAsync desktop client
  • Caffeine
  • Automator (an application already on your Mac)
  • Calendar or iCal
  • System Preferences
Step 1

Open Automator. Choose ‘Application’ as the type of document you want to create. In the left column, click on ‘Files & Folders’, then select ‘Find Finder Items’ in the next column over. Drag your selection to the right, into the empty area, which is the input window.

In the ‘Search’ dropdown menu, select ‘Applications’. In the ‘Any Content’ dropdown menu, select ‘Name’. Change ‘contains’ to ‘is’, and type “Caffeine” into the box to the right. Now go back to the second column and drag ‘Open Finder Items’ into the input window. Don’t change anything in this part. It’s fine just the way it is.

Drag another ‘Find Finder Items’ action into your input window.

In the ‘Search’ dropdown menu, select ‘Applications’. In the ‘Any Content’ dropdown menu, select ‘Name’. Change ‘contains’ to ‘is’, and type “MEGAsync” into the box to the right. Go back to the second column and drag ‘Open Finder Items’ into the input window. Again, don’t touch anything.

Believe it or not, you’ve just created an application! Go to ‘Save’ and save it as “launch-mega”. Now we’ll need to tell your computer when to turn itself on, and when to launch the Caffeine and MEGAsync software.
